Engineering & Computer Science @ Union College

Other International Experience Options

The following opportunities, although not affiliated with any official Union College programs, nonetheless offer students excellent opportunities to experience international cultures and learn more about the global economy and work place.

Summer Programs

Summer programs can count towards Section 4 General Education credit, or Linguistic and Cultural Competency credit, provided they are approved ahead of time by the Dean of Studies. Programs of eight weeks or more in duration will not require cognate courses. Shorter programs may require one or two cognates, as determined by the Dean of Studies. Programs of less than three weeks duration will not normally be considered for Section 4 credit.

Similarly, summer programs may count towards the Linguistic and Cultural Competency requirements of the new general education program. Again, the approval has to be arranged ahead of time through the Dean of Studies.

High Tech in Germany

This is a Summer German Language and Culture Program for Engineering Students at the Technical University Munich (TU München).

The curriculum encompasses a German language component (70 hours, 4 ECTS credits); specialized subject seminars and workshops in engineering and life sciences, e.g. Medical Technology, Sustainability and Environmental Protection, Hydrobiology (in English) (70 hours, 4 ECTS credits); project work and lectures on intercultural communications (in English/German); and German and European history and culture.

Site visits to high tech and traditional industrial sites in and around Munich (e.g. Siemens, State Brewery Weihenstephan) complement the program. Rounding out the program are social and cultural activities, including excursions to cultural and historical landmarks in Munich and environs.

TU München student tutors will accompany participants through the various course components and extra-curricular activities. The program also offers the opportunity to establish close contact with science and engineering faculty at TU München through participation in small group workshops focused on specific disciplinary areas (e.g. environmental technologies / modern technology and sustainability; renewable energy / technologies of the future) that the organizers are planning to hold in the Bavarian Alps during the final week of the program. For an extra fee, interested participants may be placed in pre- or post-program internships.

Requirements

The program is open to second-, third- and fourth-year undergraduate students enrolled full time in an engineering or natural sciences degree program at an accredited university in the US or Canada.

Applicants must be Canadian or US citizens, or hold permanent resident status in one of these countries.

No previous knowledge of German is necessary. Language courses will be offered at two levels of competence: beginning and intermediate. Classes will be taught by specially trained staff. The language course will carry 4 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits. Preference will be given to applicants with an outstanding academic record and potential.

Committee decisions will also take into consideration an applicant's active interest in contemporary German and European affairs, as well as familiarity with the basics of the German language, and/or demonstrated need for acquiring a better proficiency in German for future studies or research.

Deadline

Applications must be postmarked on or before March 15, 2006.

Terms of Award

The cost of the program is approximately €1,700. This covers tuition, dormitory accommodations, partial board, a local transportation pass, some excursions, and health and accident insurance for the duration of the course.

Thirty partial scholarships are available for highly qualified applicants. The scholarship covers most of tuition, accommodations, some excursions and health and accident insurance for the duration of the course.
