PROCEDURES FOR APPLYING FOR A TERM ABROAD

To apply for a term abroad, you must fill out the standard application form.  You will also provide information about your suitability for a particular term abroad in one of the following ways: formal interview and essay, depending on program selected.  Please find your program(s) below and follow directions.

Programs with formal interviews:  Barbados and Marine Studies.  Once the deadline for applications has passed, you will be asked to sign up for an interview, which usually lasts about ten minutes.  Normally, two to three faculty members constitute the interviewing committee.

ALL PROGRAMS REQUIRE AN ESSAY.

The essay must be submitted with the application form.  It must be typed and may be no longer than one page single-spaced.  If the essay is longer than one page, your application will not be reviewed.  You should explain why you want to participate in the program in terms of your major, other academic interests, personal goals, future plans, etc.  Feel free to discuss anything that you feel is relevant to your application.  Please mention courses you have taken that relate to the program.  Essays will be evaluated by the faculty member taking the group and two other members of the Committee on Study Abroad.

Students may apply for only two programs in any given term, and will be asked to indicate their preferred program.

A student's GPA will continue to play a significant role in the acceptance process, but the essay/interview is very important.

Students apply for international programs two terms in advance.  All international programs are competitive, some highly so.  Attendance at a program’s informational meeting is essential.  Selection criteria include the student’s essay, GPA, faculty recommendations, course of study, certification by the Dean of Students, and the selection committee’s assessment of the student’s capability of adapting to the program’s social and academic environment.  Should there be additional selection criteria, they will be announced at the informational meeting.  The faculty selection committee seeks a group of students with varied academic and intellectual backgrounds and interests.  The College urges students to seek advice from their academic advisors and from the international programs office to select programs appropriate to their academic and intellectual interests.  While the College is very proud of the unusually high percentage of its students who study abroad, we must note that participation in all programs is limited.
